The owner of a Missisippi plantation was outraged when a young black servant got his crippled white dauther pregnant - and she gave birth to a child, Mattie. The young mother`s family put little Mattie outside to die - figuring starvation and the elements would kill the baby.
But a very short time later the family had second thougths - fearing the might be charged with murder since Mattie was half white. So Mattie was taken back inside and cared for, then was later given to a black family to raise. She grew up picking cotton for pennies a day. She married twice and had a total 17 children.
